YMCA of Greater Toronto Wins Top Employer Award for Young People for Tenth Time
TORONTO – January 17, 2020 – The YMCA of Greater Toronto (“YMCA” or “the Y”) has been named one of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People for the tenth year. The designation recognizes employers who offer the best programs and initiatives to attract and retain younger workers just starting their careers.
“Whether a young person is a high school student or recent graduate, there are diverse part-time, seasonal and full-time opportunities to help them reach their potential,” says Medhat Mahdy, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Toronto who found his own career path at the Y. “We’re committed to diversity and social inclusion and part of that commitment includes ensuring young people across the Greater Toronto Area have opportunities to shine.”
Making diverse training and development opportunities accessible to young staff and volunteers is a key part of helping them succeed. The Y offers a range of opportunities – from orientation to offering unique learning opportunities, including international experiences and scholarships.
“One course explored Inclusive Education and the other was focused on teaching children with behavioral needs,” said Chia De Chavez, a Registered Early Childhood Educator at the Y who has benefited from training opportunities. “Both experiences have been able to shape and support my role as an Educator and allow for the implementation of different strategies to accommodate and meet the individual needs of the children and families that I work with.”

The Y hires a significant number of young people each year; in fact, more than 40% of its more than 6,000 employees are under the age of 30. Roles include early childhood educators, fitness professionals, employment counsellors, camp counsellors and outdoor educators at 450 locations stretching from Milton to Clarington and Toronto to Shelburne. The Y plans to create even more employment opportunities with three new Centres of Community under construction in Toronto and Vaughan.
The YMCA was last recognized among the Greater Toronto’s Top Employers for Young People organizations in 2019. Earlier this year it was recognized as one of the Greater Toronto’s Top Employers. In 2019, the YMCA of Greater Toronto was named among Canada’s best diversity and green employers.
