YMCA of Greater Toronto Named one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers for Eighth Consecutive Year

01 March 2019

Today the YMCA of Greater Toronto was selected as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers for the eighth consecutive year. This designation recognizes organizations for exceptional workplace diversity and inclusiveness programs and initiatives.

The YMCA of Greater Toronto provides employment opportunities and programs for everyone regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, race, religion, income level, sexual orientation or ability. The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is constantly growing and becoming more diverse – and it’s this diversity that makes it a great place to live and work.

“The YMCA goes far beyond having diversity-focused initiatives and programs,” said Medhat Mahdy, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Toronto. “Diversity and social inclusion are truly part of our organizational DNA and we encourage employees to be themselves at work.”

The YMCA of Greater Toronto values everyone’s uniqueness by:

  • ensuring that people with different opinions, backgrounds and characteristics are represented to bring a variety of perspectives;
  • creating an environment that supports people with different behaviours, attitudes and beliefs working together for common outcomes; and
  • encouraging diversity of thought and experience across all our interactions.

Our Diversity and Social Inclusion Strategy is bolstered through employee-led groups and continuous learning about diversity and inclusion topics. Topics include visible and invisible dimensions of diversity such as mental health and gender identity and expression. Employees from all areas of the Y contribute their insights based on their lived experience and build knowledge that helps maintain a caring and inclusive environment at locations across the GTA.

In addition to being among Canada’s Best Diversity Employers, the YMCA of Greater Toronto was also recognized earlier this year among the 2019 Greater Toronto’s Top Employers for Young People. In 2018, the charity was also named among Greater Toronto’s Top Employers and as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers.
