Questions about recent changes made to your health and fitness membership? Learn more about the adjustments we've made below.
Why is my child’s membership fee increasing?
Children’s membership rates at the YMCA have remained unchanged for the past 5 years and have become substantially more costly to deliver. This inflationary increase will allow us to continue providing exceptional instructors and recreational programs that your children will enjoy.
When will this membership change go into effect?
Starting July 2019, new fees, access changes and category changes will begin at all YMCA centres.
When will I start paying my new fee?
Your first payment of your new fee will occur on your regular monthly payment date in August of 2019.
How will you inform members of these changes?
If there are any changes to your membership category, we will let you know! We're sending notification letters to all active members affected by June 15th.
When will assisted memberships be subject to this increase?
When you renew your assisted membership, your approved membership assistance rate will be applied to the new fee.
Why are you eliminating the Student 16+ category?
This category was created as a pilot that we ran only at our Cooper Koo location. Unfortunately, it didn’t have the impact that we were hoping for and therefore is being eliminated. We have other membership options available for students including Young Adult 15-21 and Young Adult 22-29 (and there’s no join fee!).
Will my fee increase because the Student 16+ category has been eliminated?
It depends on your age. However, we will honour your current fee until July 2020. When your membership expires please see the Sales Desk at Cooper Koo and the staff there will ensure your current fee is honoured until July 2020. Should you cancel your membership at any point before this date, you no longer be offered the lower rate.
My family membership currently includes my children aged 22 to 29, however, I have been told this is changing – how will this affect my family?
The Family 30+ membership (which included children aged 22 to 29) was a pilot category at our Cooper Koo location. Unfortunately, it didn’t have the impact that we were hoping for and therefore is being eliminated. It will be changing to match the current family membership model at our other centres, which includes children 21 years of age or younger.
What happens to my kids who are between the ages of 22 to 29 who are currently in the family membership?
If you have children aged 22 to 29, we will honour their current access until July 2020. If they choose to stop their membership at any point in time before this date, they will need to register into their appropriate membership category.
I have been told that I will be allowed general access to other centres with my Cooper Koo membership card as of July – how will this work?
Yes, this is true. You are now welcome to visit other centres provided that you use your home YMCA 51% of the time.
Will I need to get a new card?
No, you will not need to get a new card. Your existing membership card will work at other centres.
I heard that I will be able to access Plus locker rooms in certain centres, how does this work?
We have 4 centres with large Plus locker rooms that include amenities and private conditioning rooms that are not available in our smaller Plus locker rooms. Our monthly fees at each centre reflect the amenities provided.
If you are a non-GTA Plus member at one of our small Plus locations (Markham, Brampton, Cooper Koo and Oshawa) you are welcome to visit the Plus locker rooms at all 4 of those centres, provided that you use your home YMCA 51% of the time.
If you would like to visit centres with large Plus locker rooms (North York, Scarborough, Mississauga and Central), you will need to upgrade to a GTA membership. If you do not wish to upgrade, you are welcome to visit the general locker rooms. Additionally, and as a visiting Plus member, we will also provide you with 2 towels per visit.
When will the Plus access changes come into effect?
Effective July 2019, the new access rules will be implemented.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email us at email@example.com.
