Program Description
The YMCA Learning Opportunities Program (LOP) provides skills upgrading for adults 18 years and older to help them achieve their goal of employment, further education, apprenticeship or greater independence. Services includes small group instruction, personalized tutoring, online training and basic computer and other digital technology skills training. Employment coaches are also available on site. Volunteers partner with staff to help participants improve reading, writing, math, computer and/or life skills.
Major Duties
Major Duties May Include:
- Assisting individuals or small groups to improve reading, writing, numeracy or computer skills.
- Using a learner-centered approach in order to help participants achieve literacy goals.
- Providing support and encouragement to motivate participants.
- Updating staff on participant’s progress.
Qualifications
- Minimum age 18.
- Successful applicants to this role will need to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening from their local police service before their first day of volunteering and every three years on the anniversary of their first day of volunteering.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Be comfortable with one’s own reading, writing, numeracy skills.
- Willingness to learn.
- Completion of full tutor training sessions provided by the YMCA.
- Virtual volunteers must have access to computer and internet.
- Knowledge of Zoom or WhatsApp an asset.
- Acceptance and adherence to YMCA Values, policies and procedures.
