  • establishing a dedicated Green Fund to support ongoing green initiatives, helping to fund facility improvements and sustainable new building practices, and for environmental education initiatives along with a range of workplace improvements to reduce its overall environmental impacts
  • installing seven electric vehicle charging stations that feature a solar powered component
  • having long standing programs to capture all kinds of waste, including e-waste, batteries, hazardous materials as well as furniture and fixtures for reuse initiatives

“We’re thrilled to be selected as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers, particularly during a pandemic year that has tested our charity’s and our community’s resilience,” says Medhat Mahdy, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Toronto. “Environmental sustainability is important for our future and creates resiliency that helps us respond to urgent needs today.”

As a charity focused on building vibrant communities where everyone can shine, the YMCA of Greater Toronto has implemented sustainable initiatives that also build resilience and make it better able to respond in emergencies such as extreme weather events. The YMCA of Greater Toronto reports its progress in an annual Sustainability Report.

This past year, the pandemic has presented incredible challenges to the community and the Y has responded in many ways, including redeploying its assets as food sorting and distribution locations, and COVID-19 testing and vaccination clinics.

In addition to being among Canada’s Greenest Employers this year, the YMCA of Greater Toronto was also recognized as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers (2021), Canada’s Top Employers for Young People (2021) and, one of Greater Toronto’s Top Employers (2021).
