  • Recreational area may have shallow and deep water.
  • Designed to accommodate all ages and levels of swimmers; parent-supervised option for children under 3.
  • Registration is required for all lessons, excluding select adult programs; private lessons are also available for a fee, subject to availability.
  • One-time registration lets you keep your swim lesson time slot for as long as it fits your schedule.
    • YMCA Parent and Tot Program (ages 0 – 2 years)
      Beginner level swimmers will improve body awareness and motor skills as they attempt front floats, back floats, splashing, blowing bubbles and jumping into the water. With their adult caregiver by their side, they will become comfortable with movement in the water.
    • YMCA Preschool Program (3 – 5 years)
      Beginner level swimmers will learn foundational swimming skills that will be applied throughout their future aquatics activities. They will improve their body awareness and motor skills as they kick, float, glide and jump in the water. They will be competent swimmers on their front and back when they complete the Dipper Preschool Program.
    • YMCA Learn to Swim Program (ages 6 and up)
      Beginner level swimmers will learn foundational swimming skills that will be applied throughout their future aquatics activities. They will improve their body awareness and motor skills as they submerge, kick, roll and jump in the water. They will be competent swimmers on their front and back when they complete the Swimmer Learn to Swim Program.
    • YMCA Star Program (ages 8 and up*)
      Continuing swimmers will learn elementary backstroke, breaststroke, and side stroke while increasing their swimming distance to 350 metres by the end of Star 4. The optional items give children opportunities to explore competitive swimming, synchronized swimming, water polo and aquafit.
    • YMCA Star Leadership Program (ages 10 and up*)
      Competent and confident swimmers will build on their strong aquatic skills to learn to safely help others who are in trouble in the water, basic first aid skills, and to improve their physical fitness. Each level has a component of learning how to teach others, and optional items include advanced swim skills, competitive swimming, synchronized swimming, water polo, and aquafit.
    • *Children may move into these levels at a younger age, depending on their ability.
  • Focuses on children and teens (ages 8-13) who want to continue improving their life-saving skills.
  • You must be able to swim a minimum of 25 metres to join this program.
  • A non-competitive swim program that includes interval training, endurance and stroke correction.
  • A great opportunity to introduce young children to a recreational pool environment.
  • For parents and children under 5 years of age.
  • With the aid of a water belt, you will run in deep water for a cardio workout.
  • Might be instructor led, and you must be comfortable in deep water.
  • Y Knot Abilities Programs are created for children & youth with physical disabilities and their able-bodied siblings.
  • Through pool-based activities, participants learn how focus on their abilities while developing strength, independence and confidence.
  • The Y Knot Abilities Programs are a place to meet friends and have fun. It’s a place where they belong.

Most YMCA swim programs are included in your YMCA Membership Fee when you add on the registered program option. If you are a member, register for swimming lessons by calling 1-800-223-8024 or signing up in person at your YMCA Centre.
