YMCA Peace Week 2016 Activities

14 November 2016 - by June Findlay
From November 19 to 26, YMCAs across Canada will be celebrating Peace Week. Nationwide, Ys are planning special events to explore and honour the many ways peace is made, shared, and recognized in their communities. Here in Toronto, we’re excited to be recognizing our Peace Medallion recipients, taking part in healthy activities, and discussing community solutions. We’d love to have you join us. Check out the events below!

Peace Medallion Ceremony and Reception

As part of the Peace Week celebrations, we award Peace Medallions to recognize and celebrate peacemakers creating change in their communities. Ron and Melanie Kitchen, longtime Oshawa residents, demonstrate empathy in their community by listening and understanding diverse perspective to create a sense of belonging for all. This year's recipients are Ron and Melanie Kitchen and Trevor Sookraj. Join us in celebration of their efforts to create peace and change in their communities.

Date: November 22, 2016

Time: 6:30-8:30 pm

Location: Oshawa Mary Street YMCA (99 Mary St., Oshawa, ON)

A display board decorated with peace quotes and pictures will be up at the main entrance for all of Peace Week.

Fountain of Peace

To create more awareness of peace in the centre, a decorated fountain with peace pictures and quotes will be placed in the resource centre. Individuals will be encouraged to write a peace message on a paper coin, and attach it to the fountain.
