YMCA named one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers
Sarita arrived to Canada from Nepal in September of 2008. For Sarita, moving to Canada meant embarking on a new journey – one that came with a combined sense of excitement and fear. While Canada offered many opportunities for her, there were also many unknowns.
After seven months of living in Canada, Sarita began working at the YMCA of Greater Toronto in one of our Newcomer Centres. “Being in Toronto was like being a citizen of the world to me,” she says. “I was interacting with people from around the world every day in my role.” At the YMCA, Sarita saw that differences were appreciated and that this was a place where she could fulfill her potential.
Sarita feels fortunate to belong to an organization that fosters diversity and social inclusion in all of its dimensions. “Diversity at the Y is not limited to the visible dimensions of diversity, we also embrace the non-visible dimensions,” says Sarita. “Even though people come from all walks of life and socio-economic backgrounds, the Y is a place where we learn together, appreciate differences and connect through our common humanity.”
In her role at the YMCA and with all those she comes into contact with, Sarita strives to cultivate diversity and social inclusion and has seen first-hand the difference it can make to better lives. She also appreciates that all YMCA staff and volunteers can make a positive impact when it comes to removing barriers to diversity and social inclusion.
We are proud to share Sarita’s story. It is through the dedication of team members like Sarita that the YMCA of Greater Toronto has been selected as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers for the eighth year. We are honoured to receive this award and believe that harnessing diversity and social inclusion empowers us all to achieve our potential and is vital to our vision of helping individuals and communities lead healthier lives.
