YMCA Child Care parents share their back-to-school experiences

09 September 2016 - by Cheryl - YMCA Child Care
This past summer was a big one for six-year-old Elyse, who spent July and August with older kids in a YMCA Summer Club program. Her mom, Kelly, noticed that Elyse started “talking and acting a lot older over the summer. She’s transitioned quickly from a kindergarten kid to a grade school kid — which is a bigger change than we anticipated.”

As any parent can attest, life with kids is nothing if not surprising — which means this week has been pretty hectic for many families. The start of a new school year means organizing supplies, preparing kids for kindergarten or a new classroom, adjusting the family’s morning routine, taking obligatory first day of school photos, and nights spent filling out form after form. But it’s also a time of new beginnings, from small details like implementing a new bag-packing system to fostering new connections and growth.

We asked Kelly and some other YMCA Child Care parents to share a few thoughts during this busy and exciting time of year.

How do you make the morning routine less stressful?

Mother walking child to schoolAngelina: I get all three kids’ clothes, bags and shoes ready the night before. I wake up earlier than my kids to get breakfast ready and lunches packed.

Kelly: I stock the fridge with all my daughter’s favourite foods so lunches go together effortlessly.

Nicole: I wake up an hour earlier before Jedore to start the morning routine.

What are you looking forward to this school year?

Mother walking 3 children to schoolRobin: I am hopeful that Naszair will learn the skills needed for kindergarten and the school years that follow this year.

Nicole: Jedore is excited about making new friends, interacting with his teachers and learning new things. I hope Jedore is able to build trusting relationships with adults outside the family.

What do you like about YMCA Child Care?

Mother smiling with child hiding her face from cameraRobin: My son, Naszair, was diagnosed with autism and the teachers at the Y are amazing. They are very patient and cater to my son’s needs. He is used to them which makes me feel comfortable knowing he is safe and well taken care of.

Angelina: My kids love the centre so much that they don't want to come home. Albert’s language skills has improved and Damian has learned how to share and clean up. The Y is like a second home to Kendra who has been there for the past 3 years.

Kelly: I like the Y because I can trust the qualified staff with my girls. My girls love them too which makes dropping them off in the morning much easier!

One week of school done! Only 42 left to go, but who’s counting?
