The secret to staying inspired

12 March 2016 - by Nicole Meredith
Nothing quite compares to that feeling of elation when you tackle a big goal.

Last week, thousands of GTA community members experienced that feeling when they completed impressive fitness challenges during our Megathon fundraiser. Some cycled for over 12 hours, others climbed the stairs at the Central YMCA more than 175 times for a total of 15,000 steps, while others swam laps at the Brampton Y until they had done the equivalent of swimming Lake Superior!

When these big goals are on your horizon, it’s pretty easy to stick to a fitness routine: you have a huge challenge keeping you motivated and on track. For a lot of us, the hard part comes after we’ve successfully accomplished those goals; it can start to feel like you’ve got nothing to work towards.

What’s keeping you inspired now?

Once you see how physical fitness can change someone’s life, it’s easy to stay motivated and passionate about fitness yourself. If you’ve completed a fitness challenge as big as Megathon, you already know that! Half the draw of participating was that you’d be helping others access health-promoting programs and services. In fact, together, we raised$410,762 to make this happen!

Now that Megathon’s done (until next year!), you can still stay motivated and continue supporting the Y by giving your time as a volunteer: watching others flourish under your guidance and support is one of the best motivators out there.

How it works

Because we’re a charity, the Y relies on the dedicated and heartfelt help of thousands of volunteers to keep our programs running. Depending on your interests, you can help teach kids to swim, play sports with teenagers, or even instruct your favourite group fitness class!

Before you get started, we make sure you have plenty of training, mentorship, and guidance so you can feel confident in your new role.

Why you should give it a try

In addition to learning new skills and forging new friendships, volunteering at the Y lets you help others recognize the value of a healthy, active lifestyle. That means you’ll be making a huge impact on your community by becoming a part of many people’s individual journeys to better health.

Volunteering will help you feel good about yourself and the healthy lifestyle you’ve committed to living, and that new level of confidence will bubble over into your independent workout time.
