How to get started at the Y

Health and fitness goals can feel overwhelming at first, which discourages plenty of people from sticking to them. The important thing to remember is that you’re unique, so finding an exercise routine that suits YOU will be the key to your success. Follow these easy steps to find your perfect fitness solution:

Step 1: Prepare

If you’re just beginning your health and fitness journey, start with the basics.

  • Bring supportive, closed-toe running shoes and comfortable workout clothes you can easily moving in.

  • You’ll want a water bottle, to ensure you stay hydrated during your workout.

  • Don’t forget a combination lock you can use to safely store your belongings in the locker room.

Step 2: Explore

You won’t know what kind of exercise you like best unless you try a few different options. Break out of your comfort zone! If you’ve always stuck to swimming in the past, give cycling a try. Check out the different YMCA group fitness class options and then visit our schedule page to find the dates and times that work best for you.

Step 3: Ask questions

YMCA health and fitness experts are here to help you figure out the exercise routine that suits you. So don’t be afraid to try a new machine or group fitness class - take advantage of their expertise by asking questions, and get some advice about your fitness goals.

Step 4: Make a plan

We all feel awkward walking into a new environment we are unfamiliar with. It is a good idea to come to the gym with a pre-set plan or workout routine.

If you’re at a loss for how to begin, check out our Personal Training Tutorials before you head to the gym. They’ll give you a quick run down on a few basic, effective workouts to get you started.

  • TIP: By coming to the gym with a plan you can focus each visit on a specific task you want to complete. Then pick one area of the facility to get familiar with that visit. Each time you come you will get a little more comfortable without feeling like you are aimlessly walking around.

Step 5: Experiment

No two people are the same, so their workouts shouldn’t be either. If you’re looking to relieve tension, our Yoga classes are ideal for you. If gaining strength and endurance is your top priority, our MuscleFit classes are most suitable.

  • TIP: If group fitness classes aren’t your thing, bring a friend along when you hit the running track or weight room. A buddy system holds you both  accountable, making it harder for you to make excuses and talk yourself out of your workout.

Listening to your body’s needs will guarantee your long term success. It's time to conquer your fears and stop making excuses, so you can start living the healthy, happy lifestyle you’ve always wanted!
