Take a Stand Against Bullying on Pink Shirt Day
Pink Shirt Day is a national event dedicated to raising awareness about bullying. Started by two students in Nova Scotia in 2007 when a male student was bullied for wearing pink to school, Pink Shirt Day has been recognized by the United Nations with students from over 25 countries taking part in it every year.
Bullying is an issue many students face every day – online and off. In fact, according to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, almost half of Canadian parents report having a child victim of bullying.
Help empower young people and take a stand against bullying. Here are a few ways you can show support for Pink Shirt Day:
Share Your Pink Pics
If you’re planning to wear pink, use the #PinkShirtDay hashtag when sharing your photos online.
Donate or Fundraise
Show your support by making a donation or help raise funds for anti-bullying programs like those at the YMCA that help nurture the potential of young people and empower them.
Celebrate Diversity and Differences
While Pink Shirt Day focuses on preventing and stopping bullying, it is also good opportunity to teach children about celebrating diversity, people’s differences and how to help build healthy communities.
Foster Empathy and Kindness
Children learn by example and when they see adults closest to them (parents, family members or teachers) showing empathy and kindness to people outside of their small circle of friends and family, they’re more likely to advocate for those who need help - like a classmate who is getting teased or bullied.
Think pink on the last Wednesday of February, and help raise awareness about bullying on Pink Shirt Day.
