Knowing when to switch careers

29 December 2015 - by YMCA of Greater Toronto
Often we decide our career very early on in life and rarely re-evaluate. Career planning is an ongoing process. Our personality, interests, and values change over time, and this may mean we need to look closely at where we are at now.

Getting some professional advice from The YMCA’s Career Planning Services can help you discover yourself and gain greater self-awareness to make sure you are getting the most out of your career.

We’ve come up with some questions to help you decide if you are in the right place, or if you should consider switching careers.

Reflect on your likes/dislikes and needs/wants

  • Do you still like the things about your job that you originally liked?

  • Are there things you dislike about your job now that you liked before?

Write down your likes and dislikes and align them with your career to give yourself a better idea if your job is still a good fit for you.  You may find that the things you liked when you were younger, are different than what they are now.

Are your skills being utilized effectively?

  • Do you have skills that are not being used in your job?

It is difficult to stay motivated when your talents are not being used effectively. If there are opportunities to grow your professional skills in your current job, then maybe staying put is right for you. If your employer doesn’t see your potential and refuses to encourage your career advancement, it may be time to look elsewhere.

Are you being sufficiently rewarded?

  • How do you like to feel appreciated?

  • What rewards are you looking for from your work?

Rewards from your career aren’t always just monetary. Rewards come in the form of salary, mentorship, bonuses, professional development or even through their employer’s philanthropic activities. If you do not find yourself rewarded in one way or another, your career will suffer and so will your work ethic.

Are you passionate?

  • Does your career drive you to get up in the morning?

  • Does it appeal to the things you are passionate about?

If the answer to these questions is no, it is time to re-evaluate your career. The majority of your day will be spent at your job, so it needs to be something that keeps you motivated and brings you happiness.

Through Career Planning at the YMCA, you can gain greater self-awareness, face change with confidence and receive supportive advice. Wherever you are in your career, the YMCA can help you answer these questions and put you on the track to success.
