Elevating Others to New Heights

03 April 2016 - by Talía Noya

For 13-year-old Joaquin, the YMCA runs in the family. He is a passionate basketball player who grew up attending Central YMCA where his mother is a staff member. He spends countless hours shooting hoops, playing soccer, swimming, and participating in some of his mom’s cycling classes.

But unlike most teens his age, Joaquin gets up early every Saturday to hang out with toddlers. Last year, he started volunteering as assistant coach for the children’s basketball program. Every Saturday from 9 AM-12 PM he teaches tots aged 3 to 7 how to dribble, pass and shoot.

I just wanted to help the community,” explains Joaquin. “I’d see kids that really like basketball but weren’t so good. I thought maybe I can help them with my skill and knowledge.”

He hopes he will set a positive example for all the eager players-in-training. Joaquin understands the importance of having someone to look up to – his mom is an important role model of his. Growing up, he saw her reaching out to people who needed help, setting goals for herself and working toward them, and always maintaining a positive attitude. Marquel, one of the coaches, has noticed Joaquin brings this compassion and work ethic with him every Saturday.

I have been impressed with Joaquin as a volunteer. He is really good with the kids - his dedication, his drive and his personality. He is just a humble kid.”

Joaquin’s 6-year-old sister Xiomara participates in the program every weekend. “When I was coaching, my sister came in and her ball couldn’t even touch the mesh,” recalls Joaquin. “I’ve learned to always motivate the kids so we worked with her and last week she hit her first shot! I felt happy because I knew she was improving.”

Xiomara, who is all smiles during practice, loves having her brother as a mentor.

“It’s special because I get to play with my brother and he’s a good teacher! He helps me a lot.”
