“High school can be intimidating,” she says, “but you can seek out people here because it’s smaller. I like the smaller classes, and that teachers give you undivided attention if you need it.”
The YMCA Academy is a fully accredited, alternative high school run by the YMCA of Greater Toronto. Its program is ideally suited to students and their families seeking support for learning style differences including learning disabilities, anxiety, attention issues, and mild diagnoses on the autism spectrum. You can tour the school, learn more about its program, and meet teachers, staff, and students at the Academy’s Spring 2016 Open House event on Saturday, April 16.
The Academy’s learning environment includes:
- Full IEP support, including laptops for every student and other assistive technologies
- Small class sizes and personal support (classes average 9 students; staff-to-student ratio of 4:1)
- Holistic student support (academics, health, socio-emotional well-being, community engagement, mindfulness)
- A range of academic opportunities, including Locally Developed, Applied, and College Preparation courses
- A modern campus in the Toronto Central Grosvenor Street YMCA Centre, including bright classrooms, fully equipped labs, and a broad range of health and fitness facilities
- A wide variety of extracurricular opportunities, including clubs, events, and a cross-Canada exchange
- Outdoor education and year-round YMCA of Greater Toronto membership
Finding the right secondary school can be a challenging, frustrating, and time-consuming experience — especially for families of children who have unique needs or feel overwhelmed in a large classroom environment. For students and their families ready to take the next step, this Open House event is the perfect opportunity to discover The YMCA Academy.
