Developing new skills at summer camp
At YMCA Camp Pine Crest, skill development is at the heart of our camper experience. Every session, our two-week campers choose two skills in which they want to specialize. Campers take daily lessons in areas such as archery, canoeing, swimming, performing arts, or high ropes. While these lessons include specialized skill development, campers also learn how to care for and repair equipment and to work together with others.
As the American Camps Association points out, camp activities are ideally suited to helping young people meet critical developmental needs like physical activity, meaningful participation, and creative self-expression. Valuable social skills are also developed at camp, where campers learn to respect themselves and others through teamwork and conflict resolution.
Pine Crest provides an ideal environment to learn new skills. Lessons are conducted in small groups, and are designed to meet a variety of learning styles. While at camp, counsellors have an opportunity to get to know their campers, and these relationships help to inspire and challenge campers in their skill classes. Plus, learning in a more informal environment like summer camp can have a more lasting impact than more structured educational experiences.
In short, campers are usually having so much fun, they barely notice how much they’re learning and how many new skills they’re developing.
