Camp Chat: Our Day Camp Directors

27 January 2019 - by Leigh Coffey
Currently we are in the midst of hiring 55 Day Camp Directors for Summer 2019! Our dedicated, fun and passionate Camp Directors are truly the backbone of our programs. Directors provide on-site leadership and support to all campers and staff; and they ensure that all of our Camps are safe, fun and that our programs meet the expectations of campers and their families. The position starts part-time at the end of February, and becomes full-time from June 3 to August 30.

Lloyd is a long time staff member who is excited to return to the role of Camp Director at Toronto Island. Lloyd started with the Y as a part-time lifeguard and swim instructor at the Toronto West End Y in 2012 and was hired as a Program Head at our Toronto Island Y Day Camp in Summer 2016. This will be his second summer as the Camp Director of our Toronto Island Y Day Camp, which welcomes approximately 220 campers every week. When not on the Island, Lloyd is working towards his Masters of Arts, in Child Studies and Education.

When asked why he is excited to return to camp this summer Lloyd shared,
“I love knowing that I am providing opportunities for children to explore and experience the outdoors, as well as participate in programs that they may never get a chance to do, such as, canoeing, kayaking, fire building and roasting marshmallows. It also excites me that I am able to create an atmosphere that fosters friendship and lasting memories. I have a deep passion for camp and I believe all children should experience its magic.”

When asked what he would say to someone considering the role of Camp Director with the Y for the first time he responded,
“Do it! You will not regret it. Being a Camp Director is a truly gratifying job. It will definitely be challenging at times, but having the opportunity to build a staff team and watch them grow and become a camp family is an amazing feeling. Not to mention, simply watching and hearing children enjoying themselves will melt anyone’s heart!”

The minimum requirement for our Camp Directors includes having 4+ years’ experience working with children – experience at Day Camp is an asset but not mandatory. We are looking for strong leaders passionate about creating fun and safe environments for children and youth to learn new skills, make new friends, and create life-long memories.
