6 features of the new Steve & Sally Stavro Family YMCA

04 August 2020 - by Lucy Schmidt
Each day that our crew continues construction on the site is another day closer to your new YMCA’s opening. And while we can’t open our doors to welcome you quite yet, we can share some of the great features that you can look forward to at The Steve & Sally Stavro Family YMCA:

1. Every space is accessible
The pool has a ramp for accessible entry, halls and elevators allow easy wheelchair access, and the change room is equipped with a hospital-grade table for those who require assistance. We’re taking everything we learned from designing a Y in consultation with the Pan Am/Para Pan Am Games to minimize barriers so everyone can focus on having a great workout!

2. A universal change room promotes inclusion
We want all of our members to feel safe, comfortable, and welcome. In addition to change rooms for men and women, your new Y will have a universal change room that’s accessible to all. It’s just one of the ways we hope to promote inclusivity and celebrate diversity.

3. Multiple pools will host a variety of programs
A high ceiling over the aquatics area creates a majestic space where your lap pool, training pool, and giant whirlpool are located. The training pool has a hydraulic floor, so you’ll be able to enjoy shallow and deep-water programming, after which you can relax in the over-sized whirlpool!*

4. Your workout options are essentially limitless
From functional workout spaces to a yoga studio full of natural light, there’s a space and a place for you to exercise no matter your well-being goals. And of course, your membership will give you unlimited access to a wide variety of group fitness classes taught by fitness pros!*

5. Your centre has a pretty cool history
So cool, in fact, that we’ll be dedicating a future issue of the newsletter to it. In the meantime, we’ll share that the corner stone of the YMCA that used to exist on this very site will be displayed in a glass cabinet with the year of the former Y’s construction. Pretty cool!

6. Your Y hopes to step up in times of crises
The Steve & Sally Stavro Family YMCA will be equipped with a giant generator, which will provide backup electricity during a power failure. We are excited to work with the municipality to offer your YMCA up as part of a community plan for emergency responses.

We hope these fun facts got you even more excited for your YMCA’s opening day! Stay tuned to our newsletter so you can be the first to receive the latest news, promotions, and opportunities to get involved with your new Y.

*We look forward to opening all amenities for members to enjoy, however, because of COVID-19 some amenities may not be available when the centre first opens.
