5 Steps to Career Success

07 January 2016 - by YMCA Green Team
eThere a few lucky people who were born knowing what they wanted to do for a living. But for others, it takes a lot of self-discovery and planning. The first step to career planning should begin long before you even start your career. With help from the YMCA Career Planning services, and these five steps, you can get a head start on planning your future.

1.      Self-Discovery

Self-discovery may not be a small task and it certainly is one of the most important when it comes to deciding what career is best suited for you. Figuring out what skills you have, what motivates you and what makes you happy are all important factors in finding your dream job. The Canadian Youth Services outlines some questions to ask yourself so you can narrow down your career search. The YMCA’s Career and Development services can help with this by using career assessment tools that measure your aptitudes, interest, and personality.

2.      Early Research

Whether you’re still in school, a recent grad, or just looking for a change, it is never too early to start the journey. Researching the job market will show you what jobs are in demand and give you more information about those jobs. This will help you narrow down your career choice to something you know can be successful. Knowing what industries are hiring now and trends for the future, will put you a step ahead when you’re looking for a job.

3.      Training and Education

Once you’re on the right track and have decided what career path to pursue, you may need to get proper training or education. Look for co-operative education opportunities to fast track your career success by getting hands-on experience.

4.      Get experience

Whether through internships, co-ops, volunteering or employment, getting experience in the field you want to pursue will leave you better equipped for landing a rewarding job. These positions not only give you real-life experience, but also allow you to meet professionals in the industry, making good connections for the future. Find volunteer openings at the Y to learn new skills, meet new people and give back to your community.

5.      Talk to a counsellor

The YMCA’s Career Planning Services have been helping people discover themselves and their career for over 65 years. We help you uncover hidden strengths and skills by using career assessment tools and one-to-one counselling sessions. This personalized approach can help you solidify your career goal.  Begin your journey to success today.
