4 lessons your child will learn at YMCA Summer Club

20 April 2017 - by Sasha Smith
In a few short months, school will be out for summer — but that doesn’t mean your child has to take a vacation from learning.

YMCA Summer Club is a licensed, regulated program for kids aged 4 to 12 operating in community schools throughout the Greater Toronto Area. This unique program, guided by Registered Early Childhood Educators, offers more than just exciting field trips and days spent playing games: Summer Club helps kids learn powerful life lessons.

Here are four valuable pieces of knowledge your child will gain this summer at the Y:

1. Don’t sit still. Get moving!

It’s no secret that today’s kids are less fit than previous generations. In fact, only 9% of Canadian children are getting the recommended 60 minutes of heart-pumping activity each day. So, how do we encourage them to be active? Focus on fun! Summer Club gets kids to unplug from technology by providing a wide range of physical activities, tailored to their interests. With sports and creative group games that develop kids’ physical literacy, your child will learn that being active can be just as fun as any video game.

2. Learning is a lifelong adventure

If you want your kid to develop a thirst for knowledge, it’s important for them to discover that learning is not limited to the four walls of a classroom. Summer Club offers a rich learning environment that will spark their curiosity about the world. Kids are encouraged to be leaders of their education, explore the subjects they find fascinating, and never stop asking “why?

3. Teamwork makes the dream work

Does your child struggle with being a team player? The wide range of cooperative games and activities that we have planned this summer will get your kid to see the value of encouraging and supporting their peers instead of focusing on their own successes. Whether it’s through a game of basketball or water relay, Summer Club kids will learn how to work together and respect the abilities and opinions of others, while honing their communication and problem solving skills.

4. Friendship helps you learn and grow

Learning to create positive friendships is a vital skill for children, especially at an early age. Having a friend to share laughs and create memories with can help kids grow into compassionate and healthy individuals. If your child has trouble forming friendships, a summer at the Y is a great way to help them sharpen their social skills. At our Summer Club locations, kids are welcomed into an inclusive community where they will meet and interact with others from diverse backgrounds and learn how to make (and keep) friends.
