Many Somalians have resorted to piracy because illegal fishing by foreign ships have cleaned out the 3300 km coastline, and the coastline has had no protection because of the lack of governance, leaving little options to make a living. It has become very violent yet lucrative and an appealing choice for unemployed young men, many displaced from conflict. In the video I posted below the point is made “everybody wants cheap sushi, but nobody asks where the tuna came from”. The video discusses that it is easy for Westerners to blame the pirates for what is going on but did they have a choice?
Who do you think is at the root of this problem?
A great article discussing what the people of Somalia and women think of piracy--check it out: http://www.canadianmilitaryhistory.ca/piracy-and-the-experience-of-somali-women-by-andrea-hall/
A great video showing causes of piracy and asks who are the real pirates-- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qo7ESvG9dA
