5 reasons to stay active during pregnancy

13 October 2015 - by Nicole Meredith
Regular exercise benefits you and your baby, but it can be hard to get started on your own. What kinds of movements are safe? How often should you work out? What sensations are normal, and how do you know when it's time to take a break?

Under the expert watch of prenatal yoga instructor Terry Tator, you can enjoy a calm, relaxing workout, knowing these questions have been addressed. Beginning on October 16th, she'll be leading prenatal yoga classes at the Central Grosvenor St. YMCA. By registering for this 4 week long series, you'll be setting yourself up for a healthy pregnancy in 5 ways:

1. Reducing your stress levels

Pregnancy should be a time of happiness and excitement, but moms today are under huge pressure. Friends and family are constantly offering their advice, and the lists of do's and don'ts from experts are never-ending. It's important to be well-informed, but if wading through all this information is causing you stress, that isn't healthy for you or your baby. Using breathing techniques, basic postures, and relaxation exercises, prenatal yoga helps you relieve tension and anxiety. You'll leave feeling calm and refocused.

2. Overcoming your discomforts

Your body goes through huge changes during pregnancy, some of which can be very uncomfortable. Prenatal yoga soothes many of these issues, including nausea, swelling, and back pain. By getting your body moving in gentle, safe ways, these classes also improve circulation and digestion. When you feel healthy and comfortable, you'll have more energy and clarity.

3. Improving your strength and flexibility

Being in good physical shape makes pregnancy and labour less strenuous on your body. Prenatal yoga is gentle enough to be safe, but demanding enough to build endurance and improve muscle tone and flexibility. By building up your agility and stamina now, you'll also enjoy a smoother recovery after the birth of your baby.

4. Establishing a support network

A huge amount of courage and strength are needed for pregnancy and labour, not to mention the pressures of motherhood. Prenatal yoga classes help you meet other women who know what you're going through. With a team of supportive friends by your side, you'll be able to push through the tough times and celebrate the amazing ones!

5. Building a bond with your baby

Yoga improves self-awareness and enhances the connection between your mind and body. In our prenatal classes, breathing and meditative techniques are used to help you focus on and connect with your child. These consciousness-promoting sessions will help you build a close relationship with your baby from the start.
