Q&A with a YMCA barre lover

05 February 2014 - by ymcablog
If you're like us, you want to hear about a new product or service from a customer, not the company. That's why we interviewed barre class participant Janet, 58, about what she thinks about our brand new group fitness class:

Y: Hi Janet, thanks for talking to us! How long have you been a Y member?
Janet: Hi! I've been a member for three or four years now. I first joined when the personal trainer fees I was paying with another organization became a little too pricey. A friend recommended that I try the Y, and I've been a Plus member ever since! I take yoga, barre and cardio classes regularly.

Y: Awesome! Tell us more about your fitness journey.
Janet: Well, I started taking fitness more seriously more than three years ago when I became concerned about my weight. I started working out a few times a week, and have managed to maintain that routine. Oh, and I've also maintained a 45-lb weight loss!

Y: Wow, congrats Janet! Now let's talk about barre. How long have you been participating in our barre class?
Janet: I've been participating in barre classes at Toronto's Central YMCA on Grosvenor St. since the very beginning, when barre was first piloted in the fall of 2013.

Y: What keeps bringing you back to barre?
Janet: I find that barre gives my muscles a great workout. It targets different muscles (especially in my legs) that aren't necessarily used in other workouts.

Y: What do you think of the class structure?
Janet: I like that the class moves along quickly, and we work on a bunch of areas for a full-body workout.

Y: Is there anything surprising about the class that you didn't realize until you actually participated in it?
Janet: Yes, be prepared for your arms to get sore! We use weighted balls and resistance bands to work out our arms while we're on the barre. There are also barre push-ups involved! Luckily, we have several differently weighted balls and resistance bands to choose from, so you can go at your own pace.

Y: Would you recommend this class to other members?
Janet: Definitely! Barre is great for toning and strengthening muscles, especially in the lower body.

Y: To be fair, do you have any criticisms about the class?
Janet: While I love the class and I attend every week, I will say that I usually take a cardio-based class beforehand, because while barre does involve some cardio, it's more about toning and strengthening than endurance.

Y: Great, thanks Janet!
Janet: No problem!
