Y member Pam Shirran sat down with us to chat about her YMCA story, including what inspired her to get fit, her favourite workout routines, and how she ensures her kids stay active.
Hi Pam! How long have you been a member?
My family and I have been members at the YMCA for 2 years now.
Why did you join the Y?
Before joining the Y, I wasn't living up to my full potential. I finally admitted to myself that I needed to change my lifestyle when I couldn't keep up with my daughter when we played soccer together. Since becoming a member I've lost almost 80 lbs. Everything about the Y inspires me to be healthy, including my membership card -- my photo on it is totally unrecognizable! I become more motivated to maintain my healthy habits every time I look at it.
What activities does your family do at the Y?
My kids are all active at the YMCA. My three girls are nine, five and four, and my son is two-and-a-half. They participate in dance, swimming and judo. My kids have become really social throught interacting with their peers at the Y. In fact, participating in YMCA programs really helped my 5-year-old transition smoothly into kindergarten.
Awesome! What does your personal fitness routine consist of?
I've done a lot of group fitness classes and I love working out with others in my community - there are so many different classes to choose from. I enjoyed it so much that I'm actually now teaching Arriba classes at the Y!
