The 2013 fall season at Cedar Glen has been full of teambuilding, outdoor learning, personal challenge, and last but not yet, FUN! Our amazing fall outdoor education staff team has led participants through our outdoor programs with consistent dedication, creativity and enthusiasm. Over 8000 participants and chaperones have come to Cedar Glen this fall and experienced our teambuilding, outdoor programs and community atmosphere. This is an achievement we are very proud of!!
Our fall has seen a huge variety of participants come to Cedar Glen. It is quite amazing to meet so many people of different ages and from different organizations throughout Ontario. From Grade 9 orientation days to student councils, sport teams to college athletic programs, youth groups to corporate retreats, elementary class visits to corporate volunteer days, Cedar Glen allows so many different groups to achieve their goals. We have heard so much positive feedback about our staff and high quality programming this fall.
SHSM Workshops and In School Programs
Two areas of program growth that we have been very excited about this fall are In School Programs and SHSM (Specialist High Skills Major) Programs.
Cedar Glen’s SHSM Program has grown by leaps and bounds over the past few years. We have expanded the certification workshops that we offer to include more options for a variety of SHSM sectors. The workshops added in 2013 include Personality Inventory, Map and Compass, Leave No Trace, Standard First Aid and CPR C workshops. We have been very excited by the increased number of schools coming to Cedar Glen for overnight SHSM experiences. By staying for one or two nights, SHSM groups are able to participate in multiple workshops, evening programs and even additional outdoor activities (eg. high ropes course, archery, etc).
Cedar Glen’s In School Programs continue to grow as well. In addition to facilitating In School SHSM workshops and teambuilding sessions with the York Region Police’s Youth in Policing this fall, our outdoor education staff spent a full week at The Valleys Sr. P.S. in Mississauga. The students worked together during the Effective Communication workshops out on their school yard and back field.
Winter is Coming...
As the snow begins to fly at Cedar Glen and ice begins to form on Cold Creek, we are now busy getting ready for an exciting winter season! We are eager to help many participants get out and explore the beauty of a frozen and snowy Cedar Glen. Our unique winter programming includes snowshoeing, tobogganing, winter cookouts/campfires, winter survival programs, and winter animal tracking. These programs along with our existing year-round program areas (including high ropes, low ropes, climbing wall, teambuilding initiatives, outdoor maze, campfires, night hikes) allow groups to have a memorable winter experience.
We are also excited to be expanding our SHSM workshop offerings over the winter season. We will be offering workshops specific to the Hospitality and Tourism sector. Hospitality and Tourism SHSM students can come to Cedar Glen for a day or overnight experience and receive multiple workshops, gain access to our well-equipped kitchen and work with professionals in the Hospitality and Tourism field. On top of the mandatory workshops of Customer Service, SFA and CPR, and Map/Compass that we offer, we also run three elective workshops: Events Coordinator, Cook/Line Cook and Tour Guide/Tourism-Basic. We look forward to facilitating these engaging and interactive workshops throughout the winter season.
