New Outdoor Education Programs at Cedar Glen

01 November 2014 - by ymcablog

With the 2014-15 school year now well underway, our SHSM Workshops continue to be as popular as ever. Several new certification workshops are being offered to assist students in completing their SHSM programs, including new SHSM Workshop on Personality Inventory, Problem Solving, Event Coordinator, Tourism/Tour Guide, and Cook/Line Cook. Three of these new workshops will offer students in the Hospitality & Tourism SHSM sector the opportunity to complete more certifications at Cedar Glen.

Cook / Line Cook

This workshop will offer students hands-on experience in the Cedar Glen kitchen. With the direct supervision of Cedar Glen staff, students will have the opportunity to plan and prepare a portion of their meal. As an introduction, students will learn about the varied roles and systems involved in food preparation (e.g. basic food handling, health inspections, dietary and cultural accommodations). A facilitated group discussion will allow students to solidify their learning.

Tour Guide / Tourism-Basic

Students will discuss the basics of the travel/tourism industry and explore current issues (e.g. Risk management, eco-tourism, cultural sensitivity) through group discussions and hands-on activities. The group will then head outside for a guided tour of Cedar Glen that centres on the fundamentals of group facilitation and leadership.

Curriculum Linked Programs for Elementary StudentsOur outdoor experiential programs at Cedar Glen are designed not only to be fun and engaging for students, but to be educational as well. Over the last year we have also review how our existing programs connect with Ministry of Education curriculum for elementary school students. Several of our environmental programs, such as Animal Survival, Stream Studies and the Lorax Nature Hike, connect with Science & Technology curriculum. Activities with links to Health & Physical Education curriculum include the Outdoor Maze, Shelter Building, our Low & High Ropes Courses and many more. Each activity can be tailored to connect with stands of curriculum in various grades throughout elementary school.

We look forward to seeing your school at Cedar Glen!
