Celebrating National Volunteer Week

30 April 2014 - by ymcablog
Are you passionate about making a positive difference in your community? Does the opportunity to grow while learning get you excited about volunteering? Are you proud of being a valuable part of any charitable organization that constantly makes efforts to give back to the community?

However you’ve offered your services to making a constructive social change, National Volunteer Week (NVW) is all about you.

April 6th marks the kickoff of this week-long celebration of community service. This week is dedicated to shed light on the efforts of those Canadians who contribute their time, energy, skills and ideas to shaping their communities.

Volunteer Canada is encouraging all the Canadians to call its toll-free Volunt-Hear Hotline at 1-855-372-5077 to recognize and appreciate the hard work and determination of volunteers in communities across the country.

In honour of National Volunteer Week, we decided to share some fun facts from Statistics Canada’s 2010 study on Volunteering in Canada:

  • During 2010, over 13.3 million people—accounting for 47% of Canadians aged 15 and over—volunteered their services.

  • Canadians devoted more than 2.07 billion hours—equivalent to around 1.1 million full-time jobs— to volunteer activities.

  • University graduates and actively religious people were the top volunteers in 2010.

  • The highest rate of volunteerism was recorded in Saskatchewan (58% of the adult population), closely followed by PEI (56%), Alberta (55%), and Nova Scotia (54%).

  • More than 8 in 10 Canadians were engaged in direct, informal volunteering.

There could be no better time than NVW 2014 for the YMCA of Greater Toronto to thank our 8,500 volunteer partners. We would not be able to achieve our vision and mission of creating healthier communities without the help and active participation of YMCA volunteers.
