Making Emotional Intelligence work for you

11 May 2018 - by YMCA of Greater Toronto
Did you know that Emotional Intelligence is the greatest predictor of success? It outdistances IQ and job experience in every occupation, industry, and organizational level — and the good news is that Emotional Intelligence can be developed over time.

People with a high Emotional Intelligence are aware of their emotions, have a healthy self-regard, and know how to be appropriately assertive, and act independently. To be emotionally intelligent, you must also be adept at reality testing, problem solving, and controlling your impulses to act while remaining flexible enough to consider the multiple options. You will need to be able to tolerate stress, remain optimistic, and be able to clearly express your emotions to help create and maintain effective interpersonal relationships. Empathy is a part of this, too, as is a sense of social responsibility.

Altogether, there are 15 emotional competencies that make up the concept of Emotional Intelligence. At the YMCA’s Career Planning & Development Services, we offer online Emotional Intelligence (EQi 2.0) assessments (including either Workplace or Leadership reports). And while you are almost certainly already using your emotional intelligence to understand yourself and get along with others, refining these skills and using them consistently can unlock a wide range of new possibilities and understandings.

When you complete the online EQi assessment, you will receive a score in each of the 15 competencies. Your assessment will be debriefed with a certified EQi counsellor to help look more deeply at how the various competencies of Emotional Intelligence are connected, and how they are working for you.

The EQi highlights your areas of strength, as well as underscores your areas of limitation. It can help you to see where you may be getting tripped up over and over again by the same barriers to effectiveness, either as a team member or a team leader.

Studies show that people who have a highly developed Emotional Intelligence — including the capacity to perceive and manage emotions, and to get along well with others — are better able to use all their other skills, knowledge, and abilities to achieve outstanding results including in the workplace.
