Wan't to know more about what the YMCA Medellin does?
The YMCA of Medellin in Colombia focusses on a sustainable social movement, involving all age groups. The programs focus on fostering personal and social development. These programs help to form public policies that move to create an equitable, inclusive, and peaceful world!
The YMCA Medellin is responsible for establishing non-formal education programs focusing on individual growth particular to individual culture and identity. These non-formal education activities focus on literacy, logical reasoning, personal counseling, educational and recreational training, and preparation for university life. The members of the YMCA Medellin have grown up in different neighborhoods and many amongst armed conflict and exclusion. These members share a united belief that youth are the future, and thus they contribute to sustainable education.
Inequality is one of the largest inhibiters to growth. Inequality in the education system is one of the largest systemic oppressors of youth. The Prep School run through the YMCA Medellin in Colombia is a great example of the efforts to reduce these inequalities in the education system. While post-secondary education in Colombia is geared to income, there remains a lag between what is taught in the classrooms of high school and the material required for the entrance exam to University. Students are required to take a prep course prior to attending university, but this is often very expensive. This is where the inequality exists, and while all students have the opportunity to attend school, not all may be able to do so due to constraints on finances. The YMCA of Medellin has started its own Prep School run by prior students, preparing bring youth for University. This is an example of just one of the great things the YMCA Medellin is doing.
