Hula hoop your way to weight loss!

20 December 2013 - by ymcablog
It's time to dust off your old hula hoop because that childhood toy has since become a highly effective fitness tool!

According to the American Council on Exercise, individuals can burn 210 calories after just 30 minutes of hula-hooping -- that's equal to seven calories every minute! In fact, hula-hoopers can expect similar fitness results from "hooping" as they can from bootcamp classes and cardio kickboxing.

Celebrities such as Kelly Osbourne, Marisa Tomei and Michelle Obama have all tried hula hooping, and now you can too. The YMCA has introduced hula hooping classes at some of its centres. These instructional dance classes teach basic hula hoop moves and routines with an emphasis on fitness, fun and individual creativity.

Think you won't be able to master the hula hoop? We've got you covered. Take a look at this video for a short introduction to get you started:

Now that you know how to hula hoop, find the YMCA hula hoop class that's closest to you and start moving!
