How to stay active on vacation

09 July 2014 - by ymcablog
Have a fantastic summer getaway coming up in the next few weeks? Enjoy your holiday, but don't use your vacation status as an excuse to be lazy! Check out our easy tips for staying active on your vacation:

1. Walk

Partake in some easy exercise and walk to as many tourist sights as you can. Invest in a pedometer that will count your steps - we're supposed to take 10,000 daily, but you'll probably far exceed that number as you stroll around your holiday destination.  Set aside the money you would have spent on taxis and public transit to treat your family to a nice meal at the end of your trip!

2. Swim

For every hour of lounging around the hotel pool, swim five laps. Swimming five laps will only take a few minutes, and will keep you feeling guilt-free about a day spent lying in the sun. This rule can also be modified for the beach: for every hour spent sunbathing (with lots of sunscreen!) spend 10 minutes swimming or treading water. If you happen to hit the beach on a windy day, you're in luck -- swimming with waves is both more fun and more work, ensuring you'll get a better work out! Remember to swim safely though by sticking close to the shore, and avoiding the water when waves are too strong.

3. Choose a hotel with a gym

You'll be a lot more likely to keep up with your fitness routine if your hotel has a built in gym. All you need is 20 minutes to make sure you stay on top of your health while you're away from home. Encourage your holiday buddies to come to the gym too, so you can keep each other motivated.

4. Play on the beach

Did you know that you can get a lot of exercise in during a beach day? Think about the work that goes into building a  sandcastle: digging up the sand and lugging heavy buckets full of sand and water up and down the beach can end up being quite the work out! You can also make a walk along the shoreline interesting for your kids by challenging them to find the prettiest seashells -- that way you'll get some extra steps in for your pedometer, and they'll have fun hunting!

5) Pack active gear

You're not going to go for a run on your vacation if you haven't packed your runners, now are you? Make sure you bring some active gear on your holiday, as it'll give you some extra motivation to keep up with your fitness routine during your getaway.

Now you've read through our tips, pick one or two to stick to during your summer vacation, and enjoy the feeling of staying healthy and active while you're away.
