How exchange programs develop leadership skills
Exchange programs aren’t only fun travel experiences— they help shape our future leaders. Immersed in new languages and cultures, youth develop cultural sensitivity, communication skills, and confidence, all necessary for effective leadership. By navigating challenging and practical real-world situations, such as welcoming an incoming group in their community or participating in volunteer activities, youth learn the flexibility, perseverance, and problem-solving they need to succeed in many situations. While they explore new cities and make new friends, exchange participants also learn to appreciate differences and develop empathy to lead with compassion and respect.
Here's a closer look at how exchanges build leadership skills and the two YMCA programs ideal for youth.
Develop an inclusive mindset
YMCA exchange programs bring together youth groups from various locations, cultures, and backgrounds. By connecting with peers from different backgrounds, participants gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of diversity. This experience broadens their social horizons and instills the importance of inclusivity and teamwork — qualities crucial for future leaders.
“Having Indigenous education embedded in the exchange was highly impactful,” says a YMCA Youth Exchanges Canada (YEC) group leader. “The learning opportunities were led by Indigenous-identifying people. All the students became much more aware of the reasoning for land acknowledgments and can speak to our land acknowledgement, making personal connections rather than something they recite from memory.”
Learn new skills and interests
Our exchange participants are exposed to a wide variety of activities, such as city exploration and community work, that teach them useful skills and expose them to new areas of interest. Whether they develop a craft, practice environmental conservation, or learn about regional cuisine, these experiences broaden their skill set and create future opportunities.
"If I could describe my experience in one word, it would be enriching” says a YMCA Summer Work Student Exchange (SWSE) youth. “Because, in just one month here, I’ve learned so many new things, both about life and about myself."
Youth who travel with us also have opportunities to overcome language barriers in fun and encouraging settings. By interacting with locals or managing a busy summer camp, our participants develop valuable language skills and become confident communicators.
Build independence and responsibility
Even briefly, living away from home helps young people develop independence and maturity. They learn to make decisions, care for themselves, and manage daily routines. This development of self-reliance is an essential stage on their path to becoming capable and self-assured adults.
Our programs are designed to inspire young people to take initiative. We encourage them to organize a group activity, navigate a new city, or work on a community project. Taking the lead enhances their confidence, develops their leadership abilities, and prepares them for new challenges.
"I am attending university in the fall and will be moving to Calgary,” says a YEC participant. “Planning our own meals on a budget and learning to take public transit were things that I was worried about, but this YEC trip has helped me learn these things, and now I feel much more confident about going."
Strengthen teamwork
Travelling with us provides many opportunities for teamwork. Along with making new friends, participants collaborate on a variety of tasks and activities, learning the value of cooperation, communication, and support essential skills for both personal and professional success.
Through our group exchange program, YEC, participants host their twin group in their home city. This allows each group to demonstrate leadership skills, guide each other through a new environment, represent their communities, and plan their twin group’s weeklong trip.
Join a YMCA exchange program
Participating in one of our exchange programs is not just a trip or a vacation; it's a life-changing experience that develops leadership abilities, encourages personal development, and creates enduring memories.
With our YEC program, group leaders take their groups to visit a new part of the country. Groups are paired together and stay at least five days in each other's communities.
SWSE is our individual exchange program. For six weeks, youths ages 16 to 17 explore a new city in Canada, get a full-time paid job, and learn their second official language, guided by our coordinators and host families.
Encourage the youth you know to join us and start the journey to becoming self-assured, competent, and kind leaders.
