National Philanthropy Day is ALL ABOUT YOU.
National Philanthropy Day recognizes the tremendous impact philanthropy has in our communities. No act of giving is too small – it all makes a difference. And this year more than 50,000 individuals in 100 communities across Canada will celebrate.
The YMCA of Greater Toronto couldn’t do all we do without the generosity of almost 13,000 donors and more than 6,100 volunteers. They are a vital part of making our new Strong Start, Great Future campaign a success.
In honour of National Philanthropy Day, here are some fun facts from Statistics Canada’s 2010 Canada Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating:
- During this same time, 13.3 million people volunteered their time.
- In 2010, Canadians volunteered nearly 2.1 billion hours – the equivalent of 1.1 million full-time jobs!
- The average annual donation in 2010 was $446 per donor.
- For Canadians who did volunteer, the average time given was 156 hours.
- The highest donor rates (the percentage of population that are donors) were in Newfoundland and Labrador (92%) and Prince Edward Island (91%).
- The highest volunteer rates were in Saskatchewan (58% of the population) and PEI (56%)
- In 2010, nearly 24 million people over fifteen years old donated to a charity or non-profit to raise $10.6 billion.
