The YMCA often partners with and supports other organizations and groups doing work to promote environmental sustainability. With its green roof and green gym, the Central YMCA also makes it a great place to host eco-themed events.
So on September 14, if you see teams running to and from the Central YMCA armed with clues, and shouting strange terms like, “upcycle,” “HVAC,” or “LEED,” don’t worry! They are racing around the city and competing in challenges at various pit stops as part of the EcoChase race. Organized in a similar way as the popular TV show, the Amazing Race, it’s an annual event that showcases various environmental organizations and their products and services in an engaging way.
“We want our participants to realize that they don’t have to live in the woods to be green. Instead, if everyone changes their consumption behaviour to a more holistic and conscious approach, the impacts of the social change will be huge,” says Jame Zaiyouna, co-founder of EcoChase and 2012 presenter at the Y’s Green Festival.
In addition to the Central YMCA being the start and end point for EcoChase, it will also help host an eco-trade show in the auditorium from 12pm-3pm. Members and the general public will be able to visit the trade show and visit the various eco-vendors on hand such as LiveGreen Toronto, Fair Trade Toronto, Detailing Knights, and Earth Day Canada. Green vehicle and solar companies will also be showcasing their work.
A portion of this year’s EcoChase proceeds will be donated to the YMCA’s Green Initiative Fund which funds projects that enhance natural spaces, encourage reduced water consumption, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
