Green for Green: TD donates $1 million dollars to help build healthy, GREEN communities
On Tuesday September 30th, the YMCA Academy staff and students joined volunteers from TD Bank Group and the YMCA of Greater Toronto for a special greening event.
It started with a before school greening session, in which participants got their hands dirty and worked together to plant seeds and seedlings in our new vertical garden. We also planted three trees that will be replanted at three of our new YMCA centres of community: The Cooper Koo YMCA, Vanauley Street YMCA and Kingston Road YMCA.
Joined by President/CEO, Medhat Mahdy, Board Chair, Tim Penner, board members, YMCA staff and volunteers the auditorium was abuzz. Staff, students and volunteers were even interviewed by a team of student journalists from Ryerson University who came by to take part in the ceremony.
TD Bank Group has donated $1 million to go towards the greening of future YMCA centres. TDs generous donation and commitment to environmental sustainability will help our new YMCA Centres to be as green as they can be.
After pictures were taken and snacks were shared all of our guests were invited to tour our beautiful green roof.
Built in 2009 and the first of our green roofs, it acts as an oasis in the middle of the city. From April-November we offer a variety of programs to members and our community including yoga, fitness classes and events like movie nights under the stars. TD Financial Group also helped to fund this project and have continuously been a big supporter of the YMCA and our green spaces. A very special thank you goes out to all of the TD staff and volunteers for their ongoing support!
