Michaele Gebru is the Farm Team Leader at YMCA Cedar Glen Outdoor Centre. He can often be seen wearing his sombrero and riding his bicycle around site. Michaele spends countless hours on the farm, working hard to ensure that it yields the best crop possible. Every Thursday, Michaele sets up and runs a farm stand for the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) members and the general public with the produce that was harvested from Cedar Glen’s farm.
Here are some things you may not know about Michaele:
Q: How long have you worked at Cedar Glen?
- Almost 9 months
Q: Where did you work before Cedar Glen?
- Black Creek Community Farm in Toronto.
Q: What is your favourite part about working on the farm?
- All of it. I enjoy everything from sewing to harvesting to even the marketing aspect.
Q: What is your favourite vegetable to grow? Why?
- This year, my favourite vegetables to grow on Cedar Glen’s farm were: beets, celeriac and carrots. They were the most colourful and most successful yield.
Q: What is your favourite vegetable to eat? Why?
- Tomatoes. They were the very first thing that I learned to grow as a child and I ended up doing a lot of research on them when I lived in Israel. I even did my Masters studies on them.
Q: Where did you grow up?
- I grew up in Northern Ethiopia and lived there for approximately 30 years before moving to Canada.
Q: If you could be any animal in the world, what would you be? Why?
- I would probably be a Tiger. There is also a verse in the Bible that has stuck with me. It says something along the lines that you should be as wise as a serpent and as harmless as a dove.
