Did you know that May 18th is International Museum Day (IMD)?
The Y encourages you to take some time this weekend to explore Toronto’s interesting museums with your kids:
- Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) – The AGO is the eighth largest art museum in North America. Founded in 1990 and home to a fascinating collection of more than 68,000 European and Canadian art works from 100 AD to present day, the AGO also boasts spectacular architecture.
- Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) – Being the premium natural history and anthropology museum in Canada, the ROM is certainly an attraction that is not to be missed. The museum showcases more than six million items, ranging from dinosaur skeletons to Bronze Age art, in its 40-odd exhibition spaces.
- The Bata Shoe Museum – Exhibiting a large and fancy footwear collection, this museum is a paradise for those interested in the history of fashion. The Bata Shoe Museum was incorporated in 1979 to accommodate Sonja Bata’s historical collection of shoes from all over the world. The museum's famous shoe collection includes Queen Victoria's ballroom slippers, Elton John's monogrammed silver platform boots, Elvis Presley's blue patent loafers and John Lennon's Beatle boots, among others.
- The Gardiner Museum – A haven for ceramic art lovers, this museum won an architecture award in 2006. Being one of the world’s great specialty museums, The Gardiner Museum displays impressive clay creations made by artists from Canada and other parts of the world.
- Textile Museum of Canada – Exploring the artistic side of cloth, this museum was founded in 1975 as the Canadian Museum of Carpets and Textiles. Completely devoted to fabrics, patterns, clothing and decorations, the Textile Museum of Canada exhibits as many as 12,000 samples from more than 200 nations and regions.
