Countdown to Cooper Koo

09 February 2016 - by YMCA of Greater Toronto
Only a few months remain before the YMCA of Greater Toronto opens the doors to its newest Centre of Community, the Cooper Koo – Cherry Street YMCA.

The state-of-the-art building is almost complete and plans to celebrate our newest YMCA are underway. What a celebration we have planned for the community, May 28 and 29 weekend – two days of community engagement and excitement before we officially open our doors, Monday, May 30.

With developers in the final stages of converting the Pan Am Athletes’ Village into the Canary District, eyes are on the Cooper Koo YMCA as we put the final touches on the 82,000 sq. ft. facility. The space will offer an array of programs to the community including Health & Fitness, Day Camps, Community Programs, and a 30,000-square-foot green roof accessible to the entire community. The teen zone will work with the local community to engage youth from the neighbourhood, and our Child & Family Program wing will include the installation of a 2-storey climbing structure and family play space. And that just scratches the surface.

The official launch of programming is scheduled for May 30; but, before we put ink to paper, we want to make sure everyone in the community and neighourhoods around Cooper Koo have taken part in the program schedule survey – it is your YMCA, and you should have a say in what programming we bring to you. It is important to connect with everyone who will to be part of our growing community, and we want to make sure we reflect your needs and wants.

Help us plan what you want to see as programming inside (and outside) this amazing Centre of Community.

Bringing Programming to you

Leading up to our Community Celebration and beyond, the Canary District and the neighbourhoods around the new YMCA will experience programming normally offered inside the YMCA come to them as we animate the entire community leading up to our grand opening.

The weekend of May 28 - 29, people will have an opportunity to tour the new YMCA Centre of Community, speak with Y staff, and take part in fun activities and programming. If you’re hoping to see what the new YMCA has to offer prior this weekend, registration and tours start Sunday, May 15.

In the meantime, as the days draw ever closer, be sure to stay in touch and consider getting involved as a volunteer. We want to hear from you! We are in phase 1 of building our schedule of programs.

Join our mailing list for regular updates, opportunities to provide your feedback on programs, and to take part in activities with us even before we open!
