Boat safe, boat smart!

15 May 2014 - by ymcablog
*In honour of North American Safe Boating Awareness Week (May 17-23), we decided to share boating safety tips with people planning to head out on the water this season.

Boating is fun, but it can prove dangerous for those who don’t pay attention to guidelines.

No matter whether you are an expert or novice, it’s always a smart idea for everyone to learn about boating safety rules before setting out on the water. Use common sense and follow these simple tips to have fun boating:

  1. Everyone on the boat must wear a properly fitted and snug lifejacket on the water at all times.

  2. Check the local weather and water conditions before leaving. Head for the shore if you notice a sudden drop in the temperature, volatile winds or dark clouds.

  3. Make sure you’re a confident swimmer. The ability to tread water could mean life or death in a dangerous situation.

  4. Leave beer on the pier and water on the water. You don’t want additional trouble for yourself when your senses are already dulled, thanks to the sun, wind, tiredness and the motion of the boat.

  5. Overloading the boat with people or equipment can make it unstable. Follow your boat’s recommended load restrictions to avoid capsizing.

  6. Never try to stand up in a canoe or any small powerboat, as you could tip it over.

  7. Designate a co-captain. At least one person on the board, other than you, should be familiar with boating safety.

  8. Develop a sail or float plan. Mention contact information of all the passengers and other significant details, including the boat type, registration information and type of equipment on board, in the plan. Share it with a family member or someone your trust.

  9. Inspect your boat carefully before leaving to make sure it’s not damaged. Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons (CPS), in partnership with the Office of Boating Safety, offers free vessel examination and safety equipment reviews.

  10. Always keep your Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC), also known as boating license, or any other proof of operator competency on board.

  11. Be responsible and follow all the boating rules. Operate the boat at a safe speed. Stay alert and keep a safe distance from swimmers and other boaters.
