4 tips for launching a great career

08 July 2016 - by YMCA of Greater Toronto
If you were born between 1982 and 2000, you are part of the largest generation in the Canadian workforce. You represent more than one third of all Canadian workers, and by 2025, the prediction is that this generation will make up 75% of the workforce or more. Collectively, what your generation chooses to do for work will have a huge impact on Canada.

Here are some career tips to help you get the most out of your work journey:

  1. Think of your work experiences as contributing to the Company of You.

Instead of thinking about a career for life, understand that work is a way to deepen and broaden your skills and capabilities. Go out of your way to learn as much as possible with the mindset that this is an investment in you; this knowledge will help you throughout your journey.

  2. Pinpoint a career that truly speaks to your skills and interests.

This might mean starting at lower level than you may want, but in a position where the fit is right for you, and you are doing something you truly enjoy. The good news is that you will feel more engaged, be able to accomplish more, and have more to offer when you move up to the next level.

  3. Get to know your colleagues.

Resist the urge to email or text when you can stand up and walk to their desk for a face-to-face chat. These colleagues are now a part of your professional network, which may benefit both you and them in ways you cannot yet see.

  4. Search for opportunities to stretch and grow.

Remember that work experience is an investment in you. Talk to the person who already has the position you want. Discover as much as you can about this job and how you can become a candidate who possesses the skills and education to successfully do this role.
