Nature and scope
There are nine full services health and fitness centres in the Greater Toronto Area that provide a variety of health, fitness, recreation and community programs. These centres offer these programs and services to 6,000 members, including children, youth and adults who represent the diversity of Toronto and it’s communities.
The Karate Instructor delivers programming, develops short term lesson plans incorporating physical literacy guidelines and ensuring the unique needs of the participants are met. Instructors maintain a safe environment at all times.
Responsibilities
- Instructs participants in YMCA Karate Program
- Develops and implements sequential weekly lesson plans based on YMCA program syllabus
- Assists Lead Instructor with Gradings
- Recognizes participant learning styles and delivers content accordingly
- Coaches and develops participants to meet success
- Communicates (verbal and written) child’s progress to parents and Supervisor
- Maintain accurate, up to date weekly progress sheets and records for participants
- Takes attendance, ensures participants are signed into and out of the program
- Takes down equipment as required – at the same time checking that equipment is safe and in good repair (reporting immediately all malfunctions and removing the damaged equipment immediately from circulation.)
- Builds relationship with members and seeks opportunities to share the YMCA story and educates members and guests on the YMCA as a Charity
- Ensures qualifications and certifications as required by the YMCA and regulatory standards are current at all times
- Actively participates in scheduled programs, meetings and special events
- In collaboration with individual program members, program volunteers and YMCA program staff, assists and encourages program members to access additional appropriate programs offered at this location
- Demonstrates appropriate behaviours in line with our Mission, Vision and Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; takes a member focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the Association.Represents the YMCA and the Association in a professional manner
- Understands the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors and staff
- Understands the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Current Standard First Aid & CPR level C
- Minimum 1 year of active Karate training
- Experience teaching Youth Leadership an asset
- Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Commitment to respecting diversity and demonstrating inclusive behaviour, responding with sensitivity and self-awareness to the unique needs of colleagues and members, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
- Flexibility regarding schedule, including days, evenings and weekends

Job offers are contingent upon the successful completion of a Police Records Check. Within the first four months and every three years thereafter, a Vulnerable Police Records Check is required.
