Nature and scope

YMCA Camping and Outdoor Education offers outdoor experiences that foster personal growth and build community.  After taking part in our programs, children and youth return home more confident, independent, and with new friendships.

 

YMCA Camp Pine Crest is located on 650 acres in Muskoka, Ontario. The facility operates year-round with a large overnight summer camp program, summer day camp programs, growing winter programs and busy spring and fall outdoor centre seasons. 

 

The Food Service Coordinator will work year round with the Food Services Director to manage the overall food service operation at our year round outdoor centre and summer camp, including preparation and delivery of all meals, supervising team members, ordering food and kitchen supplies, maintaining equipment, and managing the food service budget. The Food Service Coordinator should be comfortable working in an industrial kitchen and maintaining all regulations and standards that relate to food service. The Food Service Coordinator is expected to be flexible, willing to take on new projects, work well with others, provide healthy meals, support a variety of dietary requirements, and eager to train staff in a fast paced, energetic environment.

Responsibilities

Food Preparation & Delivery: Responsible for preparing and serving delicious and nutritious meals to campers, outdoor centre clients and staff.

 

Menu Planning & Ordering: Works with the Food Services Director and Facility Manager to plan nutritious meals for summer camp and outdoor centre clients, taking into account dietary requirements

 

Staff Training & Supervision: Works with the Food Services Director and Facility Manager to continuously improve the content & delivery of our staff training; provides on-site leadership daily in the kitchen operations at camp year round; provides positive mentorship to staff and volunteers and supports Food Services Director to deliver performance appraisals to seasonal staff

 

Budget Management: Works with the Food Services Director and Facility Manager to create and adhere to food services budget; ensures all invoices are submitted in a timely manner

 

Cleaning & Equipment Management: Ensures the camp kitchen(s) and storage areas are clean and organized, meeting and exceeding health standards, implements food service equipment maintenance and cleaning schedules

 

Food Inventory & Organization: Ensures the camp kitchen(s) food inventory is accurate, maintained and organized.

 

Relationship Building: Builds relationships with vendors and negotiates pricing, delivery schedules, and product quality.  Continuously builds relationships with participants, members, staff, volunteers and community partners, representing the YMCA of Greater Toronto and Camp Pine Crest in a professional manner.

 

Health & Safety: Works with Facility Manager to ensure Pine Crest is meeting all health and safety standards; acts as a member of our Health & Safety team

 

Understands the importance of the volunteer-staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors and staff.

 

Understands the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services.

 

Demonstrates appropriate behaviours in line with our Mission, Vision and Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies

 

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Skills

  • Ability to work independently and within a team to achieve a common goal

  • Excellent written/oral communication skills
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to cultivate a warm, inclusive, and safe environment for guests and colleagues
  • Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity.

     

    Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in hospitality, culinary skills or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience supervising staff in an institutional kitchen, catering, or a related field
  • Food Handlers Certificate
  • Standard First Aid and “CPR”
  • Joint Health & Safety Level 1 & 2 an asset
  • Experience planning nutritious, seasonal, local menus based on an understanding of the Canadian Food Guide that appeal to the varied needs of active youth and adults in retreats
  • Exposure to dealing with individual needs of guests with special diets, allergies, cultural and religious dietary needs
  • Flexibility regarding assigned working hours, including days, evenings, overnights, weekends and holidays required
  • Only those individuals legally entitled to work in Canada will be considered for employment with the YMCA of Greater Toronto
