Nature and scope

YMCA Camping and Outdoor Education offers outdoor experiences that foster personal growth and build community.  After taking part in our programs, children and youth return home more confident, independent, and with new friendships.

YMCA Camp Pine Crest is located on 650 acres in Muskoka, Ontario. The facility operates year-round with a large overnight summer camp program, summer day camp programs, growing winter programs and busy spring and fall outdoor centre seasons. 

Working together on a team, Outdoor Educators provide program delivery in all areas of the outdoor centre. These staff work directly with students, families, and adults, and facilitate a range of programs including: leadership and teambuilding activities, canoeing, kayaking, archery, axe throwing, low ropes, high ropes, initiatives, environmental programs and much more. In addition, Outdoor Educators assist in the development of new programs, as well as the revision and amendment of existing programs. Outdoor Educators also support our maintenance and kitchen teams as required.

Accommodation and meals are provided on site at no additional cost; however, staff living on site may be scheduled for 2-3 on-call evening shifts per week.


Program Delivery: Provides direct program delivery to participants of all ages in a fun, engaging, and safe manner.  Outdoor programs include activities such as low and high ropes courses, archery, orienteering, fire building, canoeing/kayaking shelter building, initiatives and many more.

Customer Service: Acts as the primary host and facilitator for individuals and groups, ensuring group goals are met and overall satisfaction with facilities, programs and staff.

Safety: Monitors the safety of all activities and programs throughout the duty period and responds immediately to rectify any safety concerns, fills out YMCA Accident/Incident forms and follow up forms as required and submits within 24 hours.

Stewardship: Ensures Health & Safety procedures are maintained, and shares with the staff team the duties of ensuring camp is clean, organized and safe to ensure the Health & Safety of all camp participants. Supports in kitchen and maintenance role as required.

Continuously builds relationships with participants, members, staff, volunteers and community partners, representing the YMCA, Association, and Camp Pine Crest in a professional manner.

Understands the importance of the volunteer-staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors and staff.

Understands the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services.

Demonstrates appropriate behaviours in line with our Mission, Vision and Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies

Skills Required:

  • Ability to lead a group and engage with people of all ages
  • Ability to communicate ideas, rules and concepts effectively and in an engaging, entertaining, and supportive manner
  • Ability to work independently and within a team to achieve a common goal
  • Demonstrated experience and passion for outdoor recreation
  • Excellent written/oral communication skills
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to cultivate a warm, inclusive, and safe environment for guests and colleagues
  • Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity.


  • Prior experience planning and/or facilitating engaging group activities preferred
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C required for the duration of the contract
  • National Lifeguard Service (NLS) certification is an asset
  • Challenge Course/High Ropes training and experience preferred
  • Flexibility regarding assigned working hours, including days, evenings, overnights, weekends and holidays required
  • Only those individuals legally entitled to work in Canada will be considered for employment with the YMCA of Greater Toronto
