Nature and scope

YMCA Camping Services offer the highest quality Day Camp programs for more than 9000 children and youth in 55 locations across the Greater Toronto Area. YMCA Summer Day Camps offer numerous programs for 4-16 year olds that are safe, engaging, fun and contributing to the YMCA of Greater Toronto’s vision: Our communities will be home to the healthiest children, teens and young adults.

At the YMCA, we believe every child should have the opportunity to grow, learn and have fun at Summer Camp. Behavioral Specialists are a member of the Day Camp Senior Staff team, directly supporting our Day Camp Integration Counselors, who are placed as one-on-one Counselors with a child that requires additional support to ensure he/she has a positive camp experience. In addition, Behavioral Specialists will also support all Counselors in their role; providing strategies, tools and support with any Campers or Camper groups that are having behavioral challenges at Camp.

Responsibilities

Provides high-quality training to Day Camp Staff by working with the Senior Staff team to deliver day camp integration and behavior management Pre-Camp training to ensure our staff is well-prepared to support our campers. 

Supervises Day Camp Integration Counselors through ensuring they are set up for success in understanding their role, completed all training, provides on-going guidance, support and feedback throughout the summer.

Supports Campers having a challenging experiences at Day Camp through daily check in’s with campers, camper groups and Counselors; works with Camp Director and camper families to problem solve when campers are not having a successful day camp experience, following through with YMCA strategies and solutions management process.

Provides routine updates to Camp Director ensuring that s/he is in the loop of any Campers having challenging experiences, ensuring that we are following proper YMCA Day Camp procedures in regards to behavior management and updating parents and child care supervisors, and/or Integration Coordinator when required.

Ensures our Camp programs are accessible to all campers by working with the Integration Coordinator and Camp Director to ensure camp program materials are purchased and adequately stocked throughout the summer to support our campers with additional needs.

Provides camper supervision and active participation in Camp programs; is actively engaged and participates in all Camp programs (including Swimming) stepping into the role as Integration or group Counselor as required, ensuring camper(s) are being safely supervised and supported at all times during their day camp experience and providing opportunities for all campers to experience success and integrating as much as possible.

Responsible for parent communication; relaying any behavior concerns or challenges to parents and/or child care supervisors as well as working through the YMCA strategies and solutions process.

Responsible for attending all staff trainings and meetings; including Senior Staff training, integration training, regional training and on site pre-camp trainings.

Ensures Health & Safety procedures are being followed and maintained; shares with the staff team the duties of ensuring both the Camp environment and clean, safe and organized.

Ensures administrative tasks are completed accurately and on-time including all paperwork associated with our Day Camp Integration program, behavior management logs, and any administrative duties assigned by the Camp Director. 

Acts as a positive role model for children, youth and fellow staff through embodying the values of the YMCA, following all YMCA day camp guidelines, YMCA policies and procedures, OCA standards, High 5 Standards.

Demonstrates appropriate behaviours in line with our Mission, Vision and Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; takes a member focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the Association.  Represents the YMCA and the Association in a professional manner

Understands the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with staff, volunteers and members.

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education (or currently enrolled in) working with children with special needs such as Early Childhood Education Advanced Studies in Special Needs, Child and Youth Studies, or Social Work is preferred
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a child-oriented programs working with children with additional needs
  • Experience with YMCA Summer Camps an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C that is valid until at least the last day of your contract
  • Must complete High Five ® Certification by June 3, 2019
  • Must be available to work some evenings and weekends in the Spring, including an overnight in Muskoka Monday June 3 – Wednesday, June 5, 2019
