Due to the rise in awareness of Ticks and Lyme disease we are receiving more questions about preventative measures before sending your child to our outdoor camps. The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care recommend the following preventative measures when travelling in rural areas, bush or tall grass:

  • Wear light-coloured clothing. It makes ticks easier to see and remove before they can attach to feed.
  • Wear long pants and a long sleeved shirt.Wear closed footwear and socks. Tuck your pants into your socks.
  • Use a tick repellent that has "DEET" (following the manufacturer's directions for use). Apply it to your skin and outer clothing. Avoid your eyes and mouth, as well as cuts and scrapes.
  • It is important to do this each day. Pay special attention to areas such as groin, scalp and armpits. Use a mirror to check the back of your body or have someone else check it.

For more information on symptoms and treatments please visit: http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/public/publications/disease/lyme.aspx If you suspect your child has a tick bite, please consult your family doctor immediately and please notify the Day Camp Director and/or your Childcare supervisor.
