Tackling Blue Monday with YSAP Connect

15 January 2024 - by YMCA of Greater Toronto

Though Blue Monday is a myth — there isn't one day of year that's the most depressing according to the Canadian Mental Health Association (CAMH) — we understand that cold weather coupled with a lack of sunlight can affect your mental well-being. We're committed to supporting you year-round. Read our blog post to explore how the YMCA can be your ally in navigating these challenges.

Blue Monday falls on January 15, 2024, and we're turning it into a chance for growth and education at the YMCA of Greater Toronto. This year, we’re highlighting our Youth Substance Use Program (YSAP), their connect group, YSAP Connect, and how we’re here to support youths’ mental health.

Blue Monday is when post-holiday blahs, chilly weather, and the reality of New Year's resolutions can take a toll on our mental health. To help alleviate heavy feelings, some youth turn to substances. But you don’t have to deal with stress alone — YSAP Connect has your back.

How the Y can help

Our staff at YSAP help with counselling, support groups, and educational resources, creating a safe space for you to explore mental health in the context of substance use. YSAP Connect is a peer group that offers youth a way to deal with substance use issues. The group meets online, every other Wednesday from 3:30 pm–5 pm. Together, they explore what self-care can look like and learn diverse coping approaches.

Breaking down stigma is an important part of healing, and that’s why we take a harm reduction approach. It's about meeting individuals where they are, minimizing the harmful effects of substance use, and promoting well-being. YSAP Connect provides resources and strategies to reduce harm because your well-being matters to us.

We encourage open conversations, promote understanding, and create a judgment-free zone where you can seek help without worry. Plus, you can find a like-minded community that understands the challenges of mental health and substance use. Join YSAP Connect, meet with others facing similar challenges, and share your experiences.

Let's make Blue Monday a day for change. YSAP recognizes that everyone’s journey is different. When it comes to mental health and healing, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach! Reach out to us at the YMCA of Greater Toronto if you think you may benefit from our program. Remember, you're not alone.
